What SEO costs in Romania in 2026 — real prices and what the money buys

An honest guide to SEO pricing in Romania. Real bands from 500 to 6,000 lei per month, what you get at each budget, how long results take, and five signs you are paying for nothing.

You ask for three SEO quotes and get three figures that look nothing alike: 400 lei a month, 1,800 and 5,000. All three say they do "SEO". The difference is not that some are expensive and others cheap — it is that they are selling different things under the same name.

This guide sets out the real bands in the Romanian market in 2026, what you actually get at each level, how long it takes before anything shows, and how to tell whether you are paying for work or for reports.

Why there is no single price

Four things move the price more than anything else:

  • Competition on your keywords. "Cake shop in Lugoj" and "car insurance" are two different worlds. The first is won in a few months with reasonable effort; the second means years and big-agency budgets.
  • The state of the site at the start. A fast, well-structured site needs optimisation. A badly built one needs repairs first — and those are not SEO, they are development.
  • Local or national. Ranking in Timișoara is far cheaper than ranking across the country. You compete with dozens of firms, not thousands.
  • Who does the work. A good freelancer costs less than a 30-person agency, and for a local business that is often enough.

The real market bands

Monthly SEO retainers in Romania in 2026 run between 500 and 6,000 lei, and complex projects go beyond that. Here is what each band means in practice:

Monthly budget Who it suits What you realistically get
under 500 lei Automated reports and superficial "optimisations". It does not even cover the hours of work.
500 – 1,500 lei local business, one city, low-competition niche Technical audit, on-page optimisation, Google Business, some copy, monthly reporting
1,500 – 3,000 lei firm with real competition, small online store Plus: steady content, link building, optimisation across product categories
over 3,000 lei national reach, mid-to-large e-commerce Dedicated team, broad content strategy, advanced technical SEO, digital PR

For a small local business, a good specialist at 800–1,200 lei a month can be enough to get moving. We start our SEO retainer at 500 lei a month, but let us be explicit about what that means: it is the entry level, suited to a local business website with moderate competition. It is not the budget with which you attack "web design Bucharest".

Paying for an audit separately

If you do not want a retainer, you can start with a one-off audit. In the market, an SEO audit costs between 500 and 2,000 lei; a detailed one, delivered as a document with prioritised recommendations, reaches 1,500–2,500 lei for a business website.

It is a good option if you already have someone who can implement it. It is a poor option if the document ends up in a drawer — an audit that is never implemented is worth nothing.

What you are actually paying for in a month

This is the crux, because "SEO" on its own says nothing. A serious month of work looks roughly like this:

  • Analysis and decisions — which keywords are worth attacking this month, which pages have stalled, what the competition is doing
  • Technical work — speed, structure, indexing errors, structured data
  • Content — new or rewritten copy, on subjects chosen from data rather than intuition
  • Authority — mentions and links from real sources, not bought in packages
  • Reporting — what was done, what moved in the rankings, what comes next

Add up the hours and you understand why nothing real happens under 500 lei. At a specialist's rate, that budget covers a few hours. It is not bad faith, it is arithmetic.

How long until you see results

Honestly: the first improvements appear in 2–3 months, and significant results in 4–6 months. Search engines need time to recrawl, re-evaluate and re-rank — there is no button to press.

That is why a two-month SEO retainer is money thrown away: you stop exactly before the work you paid for starts to pay off. If you cannot sustain at least six months, better to wait until you can.

It is also worth being clear about what happens if you stop after a year of work. The technical improvements and published content stay, and keep bringing traffic for a while — nothing vanishes overnight. What you lose is your lead over the competitors who did not stop.

Five signs you are paying for nothing

1. You are guaranteed "position 1 in Google". Nobody can guarantee that, because nobody controls the algorithm. Whoever promises it either does not know, or is betting on you not knowing.

2. You have no access to Search Console. The data about your site is yours. If the provider will not give you access, or sends only screenshots, you cannot verify anything you are told.

3. The report is a list of "positions" with no context. A ranking on a keyword nobody searches for means nothing. Ask for impressions, clicks and, ideally, how many of those became clients.

4. Links are bought in packages. "100 backlinks a month" is a phrase that should end the conversation. Quality links are earned one at a time and stay visible in your profile for years — the bad ones included.

5. You are never told "no". A good provider will push back when you want to chase an unrealistic keyword, or when the problem is not SEO but the site itself.

What you can do yourself, for free

Before you spend anything on SEO, do these. They cost nothing and have a real effect, especially on local searches:

  • Complete your Google Business profile. Services, descriptions, photos, opening hours. For "near me" searches or searches including your city name, the profile often matters more than the website.
  • Ask for reviews consistently. After every delivery, send the client the direct review link. Regular reviews are among the strongest local signals there are.
  • Check your contact details everywhere. The same business name, the same address, the same phone number on the site, on Google and in directories.
  • Write answers to the questions clients actually ask you. Every recurring question is an article that can bring traffic for years.

If you do just that and your business is local, you have covered a good part of what an agency would bill you for in the first month anyway.

How to choose the right budget for you

The right question is not "what does SEO cost", but "what is a new client worth to me".

If a client brings you 3,000 lei and SEO brings you two clients a month, a 1,500 retainer pays for itself. If you sell 80-lei products, the maths is completely different and you probably need another strategy.

Do the calculation before you ask for quotes:

  1. What is a client worth to you on average, across the whole relationship?
  2. How many new clients a month would make the investment worthwhile?
  3. How many people search monthly for what you sell, in your area?

If the answer to the third question is "a few dozen", local SEO is a good investment and you do not need a large budget. If it is "a few thousand", you have competition to match — and a budget to match.

Conclusion

The right price for SEO is the one at which the work delivered produces more than it costs — and that depends more on your business than on the agency.

What is worth remembering: below 500 lei a month nothing real happens, 800–1,500 is the band where a local business gets results, and any offer that guarantees rankings should make you suspicious. And before any retainer, go through your Google Business profile with a fine-toothed comb — it is free.
